The
Story Striptease
was unveiled to the world on the night of February 9, 1893 when
an artist model, named Mona, took it upon herself to entertain attendees
of Paris Four Arts Ball at the Moulin Rouge by disrobing in public.
The venue was quick to capitalize on the fuss caused by Mona’s
impromptu strip and formalized such performances, making the new
art of striptease the biggest thing to happen to Parisian nightlife
since the cancan put the underwear into Orpheus In The Underworld
half a century earlier. Mona, for her trouble, received nothing
more than a night in the cells and a
100-franc fine, causing her barmy army of new-found fans to protest
en masse outside the Chief of Police’s residence in the Latin
Quarter.
After a century of
people removing their clothes in a titillating manner, you might
expect the art of striptease
to be a dying one. Yet, in Europe there are now over 900 striptease
clubs and there are still new clubs opening. Thousands of men and
women who take of their clothes upon a stage every night consider
this as a "decent job". It has become a million pound
industry, and its growing fast. That is why I am proud to present
you Strip-magazine.
